flowersSpotted Lanternfly

The spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula, is an invasive insect from Asia that was first discovered in Berks County in 2014. It has the potential to destroy high-value crops such as grapes, tree fruits, and hardwood lumber. In an effort to keep it from spreading, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture (PDA) has quarantined areas of Berks and adjacent counties. The quarantine area has been expanded several times. Check the PDA website for pictures and the most current information.
You can also go to and enter "spotted Lanternfly" in their search bar, or click ‘spotted lanternfly’ under Hot Topics on the left side of the screen.

This insect has been found in wooded areas and residential landscapes, especially where there are tree-of-heaven, Ailanthus altissima, trees. Intentional movement of any life stage of the spotted lanternfly is prohibited. The order of quarantine means that any item that could hold any life stage of this insect may not be moved outside the quarantine areas without inspection and compliance agreement with the PDA. That includes firewood, vehicles, outdoor household items or any items stored outside during the fall, building materials, packing materials such as wooden crates, plants, or plant parts.

Hort Club members living in the quarantine area may still bring plants to the plant exchange. But you must inspect the plants and the pots, complete the form ‘Checklist for Residents Living in Spotted Lanternfly Quarantine Area’, sign the form and have it in your vehicle when you move the plants. As a safety precaution, you may be asked to show the signed form when you bring plants into the Ag Center. You may prefer to bring house plants, decorative items, or small garden tools which have been stored indoors.

As of March 28, 2017 the quarantine zone included the following areas.

Berks County: Amity Township, Oley Township, Rockland Township, Longswamp Township, Earl Township, Pike Township, District Township, Douglass Township, Colebrookdale Township, Washington Township, Hereford Township, Maxatawny Township, Alsace Township, Exeter Township, Richmond Township, Maidencreek Township, Centre Township, Ruscombmanor Township, Robeson Township, Union Township Topton Borough, Bally Borough, Kutztown Borough, St. Lawrence Borough, Betchelsville Borough, Fleetwood Borough, Centreport Borough, Birdsboro Borough, Lyons Borough and Boyertown Borough. In August of 2017 Reading, Mt. Penn, Lower Alsace and Cumru were added.

Many municipalities in Lehigh, Montgomery, Northampton, Bucks and Chester Counties are also included.
